Major Injury DUI Collision Reported in San Mateo County 

An impaired driver caused a traffic collision on Wednesday afternoon in El Granada. 

The crash occurred around 4:15 p.m. on Highway 1 in San Mateo County.

Per reports, a southbound SUV veered into oncoming traffic, causing a collision with a sedan. 

The driver of the SUV, his passenger, along with the female driver of the sedan each suffered major injuries. 

All parties were taken to Stanford Hospital for treatment. 

Both directions of Highway 1 were shut down for a period of time and re-opened at about 8 p.m. 

According to NHTSA, more than a quarter (25%) of accident-related deaths are linked to the use of alcohol. With that being said, according to the CDC, there are 30 people that are killed everyday in a car accident as a result of an alcohol-impaired driver. That is equivalent to one death every 50 minutes.
