Rebecca Helsley and Nancy Rich Injured in Trinity County Accident on State Route 299 near Fawn Lodge Road

Rebecca Helsley of Weaverville and Nancy Rich of Cottonwood were hurt following a multi-vehicle collision on Tuesday afternoon in a construction zone near Lewiston.

The crash happened a while before 1:00 p.m. on September 12, on State Route 299, just west of Fawn Lodge Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Joshua Short, 41, of Weaverville, was heading west on the highway and was heading towards the Caltrans construction zone in his 2003 Ford F-350.

At the same time, Rich, Helsley, and Nicole Ross of Lewiston had stopped their cars in the construction zone. Hesley had stopped her 2007 Jeep at the rear of the traffic line.

Short reportedly noticed the traffic ahead of him halted, and he applied the brakes, but he couldn’t stop in time and slammed into the Jeep’s rear. The Jeep then crashed into Rich’s 2011 Mitsubishi, which crashed into Ross’ 2021 Chevrolet.

The Jeep then drove southwest into the embankment before crashing into several trees.

Halsey suffered severe injuries in the collision and was rushed to Mercy Medical Center in Redding for treatment. Rich was also hospitalized at the same hospital with minor injuries.

Ross and Short were evaluated and released at the crash site.

Police did not suspect alcohol or drugs to have played a role in the collision.

An investigation is underway.
