Man, Woman Killed in Pileup Crash on 5 Freeway Identified

Pedro Garcia Canseco, 45, of Gilroy, and Patricia Anne Wilson, 62, of Sun City, Arizona, were identified as victims who died in a 30-vehicle pileup crash Saturday on the Interstate 5 Freeway in Kern County.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office reported that both vehicles were drivers of vehicles that collided with a semi-truck on the southbound I-5 at around 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 6th.

There were a total of 30 vehicles involved in the initial chain-reaction crash including 12 trucks and 18 passenger vehicles, according to the California Highway Patrol and KGET.

Pedro Canseco and Patricia Wilson both died at the scene. Additionally, there were two people who were critically injured and seven others with minor to moderate injuries, Kern fire officials said. Paramedics transported those hurt to local hospitals.

CHP investigators believe the massive pileup began amid heavy fog in the area. It appears that some of the motorists slowed down amid the patch of fog, but traffic behind them crashed into them setting off the chain reaction collision.

The investigation continues into determining fault for the Kern County crash.
