Deadly Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Crash
An unidentified pedestrian was hit and killed by a vehicle in Pico-Union on Thursday night, May 5th.
The incident took place around 10 p.m. near Pico Boulevard and Vermont Avenue.
According to reports, the pedestrian was struck by a white car that fled the scene immediately after.
It was also reported that a Metro bus may have also struck the pedestrian following the initial crash. The driver of the bus stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities after calling 911 to report the incident.
Police shut down the area for a few hours as investigators worked at the scene.
Authorities are also asking the public for help in search of the suspect.
According to statistics, 20% of pedestrian fatalities include fleeing drivers. In addition, 68% of those killed in hit-and-run crashes are pedestrians and bicyclists.
There was also a 26% increase in pedestrian deaths in California from 2014-2018.
In addition, California’s pedestrian fatality rate is about 25% higher than the national average.
