Fatal Hit-And-Run

LOMPOC, Calif. (May 25, 2022) Authorities identify 26-year-old Miriam Aidee Vela Estrada to be the driver behind the vehicle that struck 50-year-old Shirley Cavazos Juarez in front of her home. 

Police say Shirley was getting out of her vehicle and about to walk into her home when she was struck by Miriam Estrada. Miriam was reported to be speeding through J/K alleyway just north of Laurel Avenue around 10 pm Monday Night in Lompoc, CA. Allegedly Miriam lost control of her vehicle, hitting a gas meter and fence before she struck Shirley Cavazos, then fled the scene.

Shirley Juarez suffered major injuries and was transported by paramedics to Lompoc Valley Medical Center.  She later died at the hospital. 

Authorities later located Miriam Aidee Vela Estrada, arresting her on suspicion of felony drunk driving causing great bodily injury, gross vehicular manslaughter, and felony hit and run. Police would like nearby residents to check their surveillance cameras and call Lompoc Police Department (805) 736-2341 if they have any footage from Monday at 10 pm. 

Pending the investigation, the family of Shirley Cavazos Juarez may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident such as this tragic incident.
