71-Year-Old Man Struck & Killed by Vehicle 

A Menlo Park resident, ID’d as Juan Barrera Gomez, 71, died in a pedestrian crash on Monday, April 25th.

East Bay Times reported that the incident took place in East Palo Alto at 5:09 a.m. 

Gomez was pushing a shopping cart within the southbound lanes of East Bayshore Road before  being struck by a vehicle. 

Unfortunately, the pedestrian sustained major injuries and was declared dead at the scene. 

The involved driver was cooperative and stayed at the scene. 

An active investigation is underway to determine fault.

According to statistics, there was a 26% increase in pedestrian deaths in California from 2014-2018.

In addition, California’s pedestrian fatality rate is about 25% higher than the national average.
