Multi-Vehicle Car Accident on I-5 Freeway

Itania Unutoataleni, 45, of Twentynine Palms, has been identified as the woman who died July 5th in a multi-vehicle Lost Hills crash on the Interstate 5 Freeway, just north of Twisselman Road.

The collision occurred around 7:24 a.m. on July 5th in Kern County, according to the California Highway Patrol report.

A driver in a 2008 International truck was heading northbound on the I-5 Freeway. The truck driver was going about 60 mph when the vehicle crashed into the back of a 2007 Nissan Pathfinder being towed behind a 2023 Dodge Caravan. The faster-moving truck hit the Pathfinder and then the Caravan as they were traveling around 30 mph.

Upon impact, the Pathfinder veered off the roadway and overturned. Itania Unutoataleni was a passenger riding in the Pathfinder. She was ejected and found unconscious following the wreck. Sadly, the woman suffered major injuries and died at the scene. Also, a one-year-old child who was also in the Nissan Pathfinder suffered major injuries. The toddler was not secured in a car seat, police said. The child was transported to Kern Medical Center for further medical treatment..

The case remains under investigation. Witnesses may contact the Buttonwillow Area Public Information Officer at 1-(661)-764-5580.
