I-5 Freeway Collision Leaves Marine Dead

A box truck and SUV collided on the I-5 Freeway early Monday, resulting in the death of one person.

The deadly accident took place on December 6th around 3:22 a.m. near Camp Pendleton.

Per CHP, the SUV crashed into the center divider in the southbound lanes causing it to lose control.

The vehicle then veered across the rest of the lanes, causing it to wind up sideways.

A Marine stopped to help the man and woman in the SUV. Both exited the vehicle and an oncoming box truck struck both the Marine and driver of the SUV.

Sadly, the Marine who helped was pronounced dead at the scene.

Additionally, the driver was transported to Scripps La Jolla for treatment. Their condition is unknown.

Authorities also issued a SigAlert at 3:48 a.m. due to multiple lanes being blocked off.

Investigators are actively working to determine liability.

Tips for after accident procedures:

  • Always stop at the scene

  • Get vehicle to safety if it is moveable, if it is not, put on hazards
