Camerino Ramos Ortiz and Shawn Barbee Killed in Head-On Collision in Glenn County
Two people were killed and three others injured on Monday morning, August 23rd in Glenn County.
The fatal head-on collision took place at about 6:15 a.m. on Highway 45.
According to CHP, Shawn Barbee was driving a Ford Explorer northbound when he drifted into the southbound lane, thus colliding head-on with a Chevy Malibu, driven by Camerino Ramos Ortiz.
Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.
There were also three additional passengers in the Ford who sustained major injuries. They included a 35-year-old woman, an 8-year-old boy and another 10-year-old boy.
Each was transported to a local hospital.
The crash remains under investigation.
Head-on collisions are without a doubt the most dangerous types of crashes. They may only account for 2% of accidents, however they make up 10% of all deadly crashes.
The Fatal Analysis Reporting System (FARS) has found that:
- 75% of head-on crashes happen in rural areas
- They are most common on two-lane highways
- Failure in negotiating a curve on the road causes 23% of all fatal head-on collisions
- 58% of head-on collisions result in a fatality
