One Killed in Crash Involving Big Rig
Investigators are working to determine the cause of a deadly head-on accident that occurred in Shasta County on Thursday.
It was shortly after 6:30 p.m. when a sedan and big rig crashed head-on on Highway 299.
It is unclear at this time what led up to the crash.
Due to the impact, the big rig became engulfed in flames and burnt vegetation nearby.
Sadly, one person was killed as a result. Their name is being withheld at this time.
A portion of the westbound and eastbound lanes of the highway were also shut down for a period of time following the collision.
Further details will be provided once an investigation is concluded.
Head-on collisions are without a doubt the most dangerous types of crashes. They may only account for 2% of accidents, however they make up 10% of all deadly crashes.

- They are most common on two-lane highways
- Failure in negotiating a curve on the road causes 23% of all fatal head-on collisions
- 58% of head-on collisions result in a fatality
