Fatal Pedestrian Accident South of Carmel Mountain Drive
An unidentified man was struck and killed by a vehicle in San Diego on Monday night, January 10th.
The incident occurred just minutes before 10 p.m. on the northbound side.
A passerby had contacted 911 to report a man wearing dark clothing walking on the right shoulder, per CHP.
The man reportedly tripped and stumbled in the area near the merge at the I-805 and SR-56.
It was shortly after 10 p.m. when a driver in a black vehicle hit and killed the man. The involved driver stopped at the scene and was fully cooperative with authorities.
Caltrans San Diego also shut down five of the seven lanes for a period of time following the crash.
The crash remains under investigation.
According to statistics, there was a 26% increase in pedestrian deaths in California from 2014-2018.
In addition, California’s pedestrian fatality rate is about 25% higher than the national average.
