A 2017 study showed that 58% of head-on collisions result in a fatality. Within this study results also showed that head-on collisions are more likely to occur in a rural area. More specifically on two-lane highways and are oftentimes the result of a failed passing maneuver.

Highway 395 is one of the most dangerous roads in California. Majority of the 80-mile stretch consists of a two-lane highway with hardly any passing lanes. Unfortunately, it has been the site of many deaths.
