2 Hurt, 1 Killed in San Luis Obispo Crash

Justin Rodrigues ID’d as Man Killed in Highway 101 Collision

Two vehicles collided head-on in San Luis Obispo Sunday morning, April 3rd.

CHP reported that the collision occurred on Highway 101 along the Cuesta Grade at 9:43 a.m.

A southbound Nissan, driven by Justin Rodrigues, 18, spun out of control for unknown reasons.

As a result, the Nissan then crossed over into oncoming traffic and collided with a Ford Fusion, driven by Sandra Gastelum.

Both Gastelum and the Nissan passenger, Kenneth Rocha, sustained major injuries and were hospitalized for treatment.

Sadly, Rodrigues, a Lemoore resident, died at the scene of the crash.

Investigators are working to piece together all of the details of the accident.

JT Legal Group sends our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Justini Rodrigues.

Head-on collisions are without a doubt the most dangerous types of crashes. They may only account for 2% of accidents, however they make up 10% of all deadly crashes.

The Fatal Analysis Reporting System (FARS) has found that:

  • 75% of head-on crashes happen in rural areas
  • They are most common on two-lane highways
  • Failure in negotiating a curve on the road causes 23% of all fatal head-on collisions
  • 58% of head-on collisions result in a fatality
