Fatal Wrong-Way Collision on I-80

Two people were killed as the result of a wrong-way collision in Contra Costa Sunday morning.

Reports included that the crash occurred within the eastbound lanes of the I-80 Freeway.

It occurred around 3:40 a.m. when a westbound driver collided with an oncoming vehicle.

Upon impact, the eastbound driver also collided with a Tesla just west of Pomona Street.

One of the involved vehicles caught fire due to the wreck.

The name of the two who were killed have yet to be disclosed pending notification of kin.

An active investigation is underway.

Although crashes involving wrong-way driving account for only 3% of motor vehicle accidents, they usually have a higher fatality rate as they are often head-on collisions.

A study in Virginia also concluded that accidents which include wrong-way driving are twenty-seven times more likely to end in a fatality compared to other types of accidents.

If your injuries are caused by the negligence of a third party you may be entitled to compensation. In the event of a death, families may also be entitled to wrongful death benefits.
