Vehicle Drives Through Homeless Encampment in Koreatown Injuring 4 People
According to the LA Fire Department, the collision took place around 6 a.m. in the 500 block of South Virgil Avenue.
It was reported that a Dodge Dart was speeding down Virgil Avenue prior to hitting a Toyota Corolla. As a result of that collision, the Dodge veered off the roadway, crashing into the sidewalk and driving through a homeless encampment.
One man who was sleeping on the sidewalk became trapped underneath the vehicle and sustained major injuries.
Firefighters had to extricate the man before transporting him to a local hospital.
In addition, three other people who were in the Dodge Dart sustained minor injuries and were also treated at a local hospital.
Speeding was a contributing factor in 26% of traffic accidents that resulted in death(s) in 2018, according to the NHTSA. The dangers of speeding include:
- Loss of control of vehicle
- Increase in crash severity
- Increase in fuel consumption and/or cost
- Reduces the effectiveness of protection equipment
