Two vehicles collided head-on as the result of a wrong-way driver in Cerritos on Friday morning.
The deadly crash occurred at about 2:21 a.m. on February 18th within the northbound lanes of the 605 Freeway.
Per reports, a driver made an illegal U-turn on the freeway, swerving into the southbound driver.
As a result, the crash resulted in a fire and sadly both drivers were killed. One of which was an unidentified 38-year-old woman.
All southbound lanes were shut down for several hours following the accident.
The crash remains under investigation.
Although crashes involving wrong-way driving account for only 3% of motor vehicle accidents, they usually have a higher fatality rate as they are often head-on collisions. A study in Virginia concluded that those accidents which include wrong-way driving are twenty-seven times more likely to end in a fatality compared to other types of accidents.
