DUI Crash Leaves 2 Bicyclists Injured

An alleged drunk driver hit and injured two bicyclists on Halloween evening in Sausalito.

The accident occurred around 6:30 p.m. in the area of Bridgeway and Nevada Street.

According to police, the two bicyclists were riding northbound when a vehicle hit them from behind.

As a result, both bicyclists were ejected from their bikes onto the roadway.

One of the riders was treated at the scene and another was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Their current condition is unknown.

In addition, it was discovered that the driver was under the influence at the time of the accident.

Jeffery Gillis, 51, was arrested and charged for DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a weapon.

Gillis also stopped at the scene and was fully cooperative with authorities.

Similar to motorcyclists, bicyclists are just as vulnerable on the roads. According to the NHTSA, 30% of bicycle accident injuries occur when hit by a vehicle. In addition, these injuries are often the result of the driver not paying attention.
