Head-On Collision on State Route 154
Major injuries were sustained as the result of a head-on collision in Santa Barbara Monday afternoon.
It was reported that the accident occurred at 1:48 p.m. on March 7th within the westbound lanes of SR-154.
A BMW collided with a Lexus in front of the Cachuma Lake Campground entrance.
Upon impact, two people suffered major injuries and another moderate injuries.
One victim had to be airlifted to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and the other two were transported via ground ambulance.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Head-on collisions are without a doubt the most dangerous types of crashes. They may only account for 2% of accidents, however they make up 10% of all deadly crashes.
The Fatal Analysis Reporting System (FARS) has found that:
- 75% of head-on crashes happen in rural areas
- They are most common on two-lane highways
- Failure in negotiating a curve on the road causes 23% of all fatal head-on collisions
- 58% of head-on collisions result in a fatality
