20-Year-Old Man ID’d in Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash

Police are in search of the hit-and-run driver that killed a 20-year-old man in Canoga Park Tuesday morning.

It was just before 12:30 a.m. when a Dodge Ram pickup truck was driving 40 mph over the speed limit on June 28th.

The pickup possibly ran a red light before broadsiding a Lexus sedan at the intersection of De Soto Avenue and Vanowen Street.

Due to the impact, the Lexus was sent flying into a telephone pole.

The crash also caused debris to be scattered across the roadway.

Several residents nearby left their apartments to see what happened since they heard a loud explosion from the crash.

The victim has been identified as Nelson Castaneda, 20, of Canoga Park.

JT Legal Group sends our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Nelson Castaneda.

Speeding is without a doubt one of the leading causes in motor vehicle accidents, killing 9,478 people in 2018 according to the NHTSA. It was also a contributing factor in 26% of traffic accidents that resulted in death(s). The dangers of speeding include:

  • Loss of control of vehicle
  • Increase in crash severity
  • Increase in fuel consumption and/or cost
  • Reduces the effectiveness of protection equipment

In addition, hit-and-run collisions account for almost 6 deaths per day and there is at least one per minute in the U.S.
