Jonathan Shipp Sr, 35, ID as Suspect in Oceanside DUI Crash
Authorities detained Jonathan Shipp Sr after a DUI crash on Vista Way in Oceanside.
Police determined that the 35-year-old Escondido man was under the influence when the wreck took place on Tuesday.
The incident began when Jonathan Shipp Sr was driving a white Kia Optima at a high rate of speed in Oceanside. He exited west State Route 78 and as he merged onto Vista Way, he lost control of his car.
At the same time, an Oceanside police officer parked their SUV in the 1200 block of Vista Way. Police said the suspect went up a raised center island and struck the patrol car.
Police Officer Injured in Wreck
The impact of the collision pushed the SUV more than 40 feet. Both vehicles ended up with significant front-end damage as a result of the accident.
The San Diego Union-Tribune and NBC San Diego wrote that the wreck occurred at around 1:35 a.m. Jonathan Shipp Sr and the officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries following the crash.
Paramedics rushed both patients to a hospital for treatment. The reports did not disclose the name of the wounded victim and their condition at this time.
Meanwhile, police found several alcohol bottles inside the Kia when the incident happened. They soon arrested Jonathan Shipp Sr on suspicion of felony DUI with injury.
