Head-on Mendocino County Crash

Two vehicles collided head-on in Mendocino County on Friday morning, August 13th.

The crash occurred on the Redwood Highway 101 near Longvale.

According to reports, the two cars involved were a silver sedan and a white SUV. CHP disclosed that one vehicle was heading southbound when it crossed over double yellow lines into the northbound lane.

As a result, the SUV overturned and sustained major damage. Immediately following the collision, the vehicles were blocking the northbound No. 2 lane. This was just north of the Moss Cove Rest Area and south of Covelo Road.

Reports did not mention how many people were hurt. One person, however, was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Tow trucks had to remove both damaged vehicles from the road.

Authorities are actively investigating the crash.

Head-on collisions are without a doubt the most dangerous types of crashes. They may only account for 2% of accidents, however they make up 10% of all deadly crashes.

The Fatal Analysis Reporting System (FARS) has found that:

  • 75% of head-on crashes happen in rural areas
  • They are most common on two-lane highways
  • Failure in negotiating a curve on the road causes 23% of all fatal head-on collisions
  • 58% of head-on collisions result in a fatality
