25-year-old Man Killed as Result of a Head-On Collision
The crash happened at about 4:35 a.m. on August 22nd in south Sacramento on Highway 99 near Dillard Road.
CHP reports revealed that Thind was traveling south in a Dodge Ram pickup truck when he collided with the center divider. Following that crash, the pickup was then hit head-on with an oncoming Galt police patrol vehicle.
Thind was the driver and was pronounced dead at the scene. There were also two passengers in the pickup who sustained moderate injuries and were both hospitalized.
The two officers in the patrol car were extricated from the vehicle and one was in stable condition and the other in critical condition.
Both lanes of Highway 99 were closed after the crash.
An active investigation is ongoing.
Head-on collisions are without a doubt the most dangerous types of crashes. They may only account for 2% of accidents, however they make up 10% of all deadly crashes.
The Fatal Analysis Reporting System (FARS) has found that:
- 75% of head-on crashes happen in rural areas
- They are most common on two-lane highways
- Failure in negotiating a curve on the road causes 23% of all fatal head-on collisions
- 58% of head-on collisions result in a fatality
