Elderly Bicyclist Killed By Crash In Salinas

A vehicle struck an elderly bicyclist on Thursday, September 9th in Salinas, California.

According to the Salinas Police Department, the fatal accident occurred on San Juan Grade Road near Boronda Road.

An unidentified 91-year-old man was reportedly riding his bike towards Boronda Road when he turned directly into another vehicle’s path. The unidentified vehicle was driving behind the bicyclist, per reports.

Despite attempting to avoid the bicyclist, the vehicle struck the man. The unidentified driver was fully cooperative with authorities at the scene.

The elderly man was transported to the hospital and admitted to the ICU, where he later died as the result of his injuries.

Authorities have not released the identity of the bicyclist pending notification of kin.

Similar to motorcyclists, bicyclists are just as vulnerable on the roads. According to the NHTSA, 30% of bicycle accident injuries occur when hit by a vehicle. In addition, these injuries are often the result of the driver not paying attention.

Other things that factor into these accidents are road conditions and driving at night. Majority of bicycle and vehicle accidents are likely to happen when it is dark outside.

Because of the various dangers bicyclists face on the road, it is important that they possess all protection equipment.
