65-Year-Old Man Killed on Interstate 5

An impaired driver caused a fatal collision in Carlsbad on Wednesday night, April 27th.

The accident took place at 11:17 p.m. within the southbound lanes of the Interstate 5 freeway.

Per CHP, Douglas Payne, 51, was driving a Honda Accord before drifting into the right shoulder.

A Ford Explorer was pulled over due to being disabled and the Accord rear-ended it.

The impact caused the Ford to hit a 65-year-old man who was helping the occupants of the disabled car.

Sadly, the man died at the scene.

Authorities arrested Payne on DUI charges as well as gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

Investigators shut down the area for a few hours as crews worked at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

According to NHTSA, more than a quarter (25%) of accident-related deaths are linked to the use of alcohol. With that being said, according to the CDC, there are 30 people that are killed everyday in a car accident as a result of an alcohol-impaired driver. That is equivalent to one death every 50 minutes.
