Major Injury Traffic Accident on Avenida De La Fuente
A pickup truck collided head-on with a semi-truck under unclear circumstances on Tuesday night.
The crash occurred at 7:50 p.m. on February 8th in Otay Mesa.
According to reports, the collision took place in the 8400 block of Avenida De La Fuente, just north of the U.S.-Mexico border.
The driver of the pickup was trapped inside of the vehicle and had to be extricated by firefighters.
Paramedics airlifted the driver to a hospital for treatment. Their condition is unknown at this time.
The crash also resulted in a diesel spill from the semi-truck and was cleared by the hazmat crew.
An active investigation is underway to determine liability.
Head-on collisions are without a doubt the most dangerous types of crashes. They may only account for 2% of accidents, however they make up 10% of all deadly crashes.
The Fatal Analysis Reporting System (FARS) has found that:
- 75% of head-on crashes happen in rural areas
- They are most common on two-lane highways
- Failure in negotiating a curve on the road causes 23% of all fatal head-on collisions
- 58% of head-on collisions result in a fatality
