CHP Officer Trapped After Driver Slams into Patrol Car

A California Highway Patrol officer was hospitalized after a driver crashed into the rear of his patrol vehicle Sunday night on a freeway in Garden Grove, according to authorities.

The accident took place at about 8:45 p.m. on the westbound 22 Freeway.

The officer had pulled over on the freeway to assist the driver of a white Porsche Cayenne, who was experiencing mechanical problems when a Chevy Tahoe rear-ended the patrol car and also hit the Porsche.

The officer got trapped in his car and had to be extricated using the jaws of life by a responding team of firefighters with the Orange County Fire Authority.

The officer was transported to the University of California, Irvine Medical Center with unspecified injuries. It was unclear if the occupants of the other vehicles were injured.

Authorities did not mention if drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.

22 Freeway remained closed for about an hour while police investigated.
