75-Year-Old Man Hit by Vehicle in San Diego
A vehicle struck an elderly male cyclist from behind on Wednesday afternoon in San Diego, resulting in major injuries.
The incident occurred on November 17th at 3:00 p.m. in the 2300 block of Cushing Road near Liberty Station NTC Park.
Per reports, the man was riding southbound when a Ford Escape rear-ended him.
Due to the impact, the bicyclist was ejected from his bike and suffered a broken clavicle and several broken ribs.
The man was rushed to a local hospital for treatment.
In addition, the involved driver stopped at the scene and was fully cooperative with authorities.
San Diego police are actively investigating the accident to see what may have factored into the collision.
Similar to motorcyclists, bicyclists are just as vulnerable on the roads. According to the NHTSA, 30% of bicycle accident injuries occur when hit by a vehicle. In addition, these injuries are often the result of the driver not paying attention.
Another issue that factors into bicycle and vehicle accidents is the fact that both parties are not fully aware of their rights/responsibilities on the road. Who has the right of way? Drivers are also not always knowledgeable of when to yield. When a driver fails to yield, more of these accidents are likely to occur.
Because of the various dangers bicyclists face on the road, it is important that they possess all protection equipment.
