Male Bicyclist Hit & Killed in Oakland 

A 60-year-old Berkley resident, ID’d as Jonathan Waters, fell victim to a bicycle crash on May 27th.

The incident occurred in Oakland just after 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of Shattuck Avenue and 55th Street. 

Waters was riding a bike when a vehicle struck him under unclear circumstances. 

Paramedics rushed the man to the hospital where he sadly died the next day just after 7:40 a.m. 

The 18-year-old involved driver stayed at the scene and was fully cooperative with authorities. 

Oakland police are actively investigating the accident.

Similar to motorcyclists, bicyclists are just as vulnerable on the roads. According to the NHTSA, 30% of bicycle accident injuries occur when hit by a vehicle. In addition, these injuries are often the result of the driver not paying attention.

Drivers are also not always knowledgeable of when to yield. When a driver fails to yield, more of these accidents are likely to occur.
