Ana Moreno Santos and Juan Carlos Menjivar Killed in Granada Hills

Two people were killed in a collision involving a big rig on Sunday morning, August 15th, in Granada Hills.

The collision occurred at about 12:57 a.m. on the southbound 5 freeway.

According to reports, a 2012 silver Lexus driven by 37-year-old Juan Carlos Menjivar slammed into a big rig parked on the shoulder.

Menjivar, along with 33-year-old Ana Moreno Santos, died at the scene. Santos was also a passenger in the Lexus.

Menjivar was reportedly speeding when he lost control after approaching a curve in the roadway. This caused him to rear end the 2007 Dart International truck.

The Lexus caught fire as a result of the crash and both Santos and Menjivar were also decapitated.

Furthermore, the 35-year-old man operating the big rig had no injuries.

Speeding was a contributing factor in 26% of traffic accidents that resulted in death(s) in 2018, according to the NHTSA. The dangers of speeding include:

  • Loss of control of vehicle
  • Increase in crash severity
  • Increase in fuel consumption and/or cost
