Wrong-Way Crash on I-8
Two vehicles collided head-on as the result of a wrong-way driver in Alpine Thursday morning.
It was just after 2 a.m. when a Nissan Altima was traveling east within the westbound lanes.
The Altima was driven by a female and this caused a head-on collision with a blue compact vehicle.
Upon impact, both vehicles became engulfed in flames.
Both drivers had to be extracted from their vehicles and were rushed to a hospital. Their condition is unknown at this time.
It is also unclear whether or not alcohol factored into the collision.
An active investigation is underway.
Although crashes involving wrong-way driving account for only 3% of motor vehicle accidents, they usually have a higher fatality rate as they are often head-on collisions.
A study in Virginia concluded that those accidents which include wrong-way driving are twenty-seven times more likely to end in a fatality compared to other types of accidents.
