Adelina Briones Killed in Temecula Collision
A three-vehicle fatal collision took place on Thursday evening in Temecula, CA.
The crash occurred at about 9:50 p.m on August 19th on the Interstate 15 Freeway near Rancho California Road.
According to CHP, 36-year-old Jawed Naweed was speeding when he failed to use his turn signal. As a result, he veered into another lane hitting a Lexus that was occupied by two women and one man.
The Lexus collided with the center divider and Naweed’s vehicle was then struck by an SUV.
One of the women in the Lexus was a rear-passenger who was pronounced dead at the scene. She was 80 years old and has been ID’d as Adelina Briones.
Four other people sustained moderate injuries and were taken to local hospitals. Their identities and conditions remain unknown.
Naweed fled the scene after being picked up by an SUV.
He later surrendered to police and was arrested on the suspicion of DUI, hit-and-run, and gross vehicular manslaughter. His bail was also set at $75,000.
Did you know that failure to use a turn signal is the cause of over 2 million car accidents yearly? This is more than distracted driving which results in about 950,000 accidents.
Additionally, more than a quarter (25%) of accident-related deaths are linked to the use of alcohol. With that being said, according to the CDC, there are 30 people that are killed everyday in a car accident as a result of an alcohol-impaired driver. That is equivalent to one death every 50 minutes.
